Consonant Gradation in Estonian and Sámi: Two-Level Solution

چکیده
Koskenniemi’s two-level morphology was the first practical general model in the history of computational linguistics for the analysis of morphologically complex languages. In this article we will reconsider one of the key innovations in Koskenniemi (1983), namely the treatment of consonant gradation in finite state transducers. We will look not at Finnish, but at two languages with a more extensive consonant gradation system, namely Estonian and Sámi. The goal of the paper is to demonstrate two different ways of modeling consonant gradation in a finite state morphological system lexical and morphophonological. We will also compare the resulting systems by their computational complexity and human-readability. Consonant gradation is rare among the languages of the world, but stem alternation in itself is not, and the treatment of consonant gradation can readily be transferred to other stem alternation phenomena. Koskenniemi’s original idea was to see stem alternation as an agglutinative phenomenon. Consider the example (14.1), showing a two-level representation of stem alternation.

Optimality Theoretic Account of Acquisition of Consonant Clusters of English Syllables by Persian EFL Learners*
This study accounts for the acquisition of the consonant clusters of English syllable structures both in onset and coda positions by Persian EFL learners. Persian syllable structure is "CV(CC)", composed of one consonant at the initial position and two optional consonants at the final position; whereas English syllable structure is "(CCC)V(CCCC)". Therefore, Persian EFL learners need to resolve...
متن کاملSegmental context effects on temporal realization of Estonian quantity
The Estonian three-way quantity system is usually described by a robust foot-level compensatory mechanism of the stressed and the unstressed syllable durations. Beneath the three-way foot-level contrast, the quantity oppositions can be realized by seven different segmental combinations of the initial vowel and the following intervocalic consonant length. In this work we investigated the effects...
متن کاملTwo-Dimensional Elasticity Solution for Arbitrarily Supported Axially Functionally Graded Beams
First time, an analytical two-dimensional (2D) elasticity solution for arbitrarily supported axially functionally graded (FG) beam is developed. Linear gradation of the material property along the axis of the beam is considered. Using the strain displacement and constitutive relations, governing partial differential equations (PDEs) is obtained by employing Ressiner mixed var...
متن کاملStudy of the effect of Estonian and aqueous extract of Persian walnut tree leaf (Juglans regia) on growth indicators in western white shrimp farmed (Litopenaeus vannamei)
The aim of this study was to investigate the effects of Estonian and aqueous extracts of Persian walnut leaves on the performance of growth indices in western white shrimp (Litopenaeus vannamei). Materials and methods included 6 treatments of shrimp with different concentrations of 100, 200 and 300 mg/kg aqueous and Estonian extracts of Persian walnut leaves in the diet and 2 negative control t...
متن کاملFinite-State Morphology of Estonian: Two-Levelness Extended
The paper is concentrated on modeling the Estonian morphology in the framework of twolevel morphology model. The result is a consistent description of Estonian morphology, which consists of a network of lexicons (root lexicons cover 2500 most frequent word roots) and two-level rules. The main rule set contains 45 rules, which describe various stem changes. The subset of rules dealing with stem ...
